FAQs
WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?
A midwife is a healthcare provider trained to provide obstetric and gynecological services, including primary care, prenatal and obstetric care, and routine gynecological care like annual exams and contraception. Midwives can do ultrasounds, order testing, prescribe medications and can send referrals.
DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?
We are out-of-network with all insurance companies but are committed to keeping quality health care accessible and affordable. We submit prior authorizations or precertifications as able, bill your insurance and fight to get you maximum reimbursement and coverage. Some insurances will cover 100% of your care and home birth. We accept HSAs, payment plans, credit cards, and venmo.
How Much does a home birth cost?
Our total fee includes prenatal care, labor services, postpartum care, birth supplies, birth assistants and birth tub rental. A payment plan specific to your circumstances and insurance will be worked out. With self pay or private insurance we request payment by your 36 week visit.
What does prenatal/postpartum care look like?
You will see your midwives on the typical maternity schedule: Once per month until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly from 36 weeks until birth. Prenatal appointments take place in our office. Appointments last 45 min-1 hour, and you’ll typically see your midwife about 14 times before your birth. When you arrive at the office, you’ll be asked to use the bathroom and dip your urine stick for the midwife to evaluate. The first 30-45 minutes are focused on discussing your pregnancy, nutritional counseling, allowing you to ask questions, and getting to know each other. The last 15 minutes will include taking your blood pressure, measuring your fundal height, palpating your abdomen to check your baby’s position, and listening to your baby’s heart rate. When appropriate, we also check for anemia or run other labs. We encourage family to participate in prenatal visits. One of the many benefits of midwifery care is the number of postpartum visits! We see clients and new babies in the family home at 24-36 hours and 3-4 days postpartum. We also provide a 10-14 day visit in office, and a 6 week visit in office. We are able to continue providing emotional support and make recommendations for herbs, supplements, and beyond if necessary. The postpartum can be a wonderful time, but it can also be extremely challenging. We’re here to help support you! We assist you with birth certificate, social security card, and family leave paperwork. We do PKU, vitamin K and erythromycin ointment if you desire.
What does home birth care include?
We come to your home when you start active labor. The midwife and 1-2 birth assistants come. We set up all of our supplies, monitor you and your baby and support you through your labor. After your baby is born, we stay with you for 2-3 hours. We make sure mom and baby are stable, breastfeeding is established, the comprehensive newborn exam is complete, your home is cleaned (we leave everything exactly how it was when we arrived), your birth pool is drained and cleaned (if you had a water labor/birth), your laundry is pre-treated and in the washing machine, and your garbage is outside. We also make you something to eat!
